Training

The UTMB–CMC LPS provides education and training for correctional health care professionals.  All aspects of prison HIV care from diagnosis of HIV and its complications to pharmacologic treatment and transitional care are covered in CME/CNE accredited courses.  Some of our special areas of expertise include HIV and Hepatitis co– infections, HIV & Women in Prisons and the Psychiatric Care of Incarcerated Offenders with HIV.  We provide technical assistance to prison health care professionals and community based organizations as offenders from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice TDCJ transition to the community.  A unique feature of our LPS is that we conduct distance training using the UTMB Electronic Health Network, a computer and video network, which allows us to transmit interactive programs to remote sites throughout the state of Texas.

We generally conduct Level II and Level III Trainings.  The Level II trainings include our 6 yearly Lunch and Learn sessions directed at nursing aspects of HIV care.  We conduct one large 3 day Level II/Level III training per year, "The HIV Mini–fellowship for Correctional Providers." The Level III training is done with patient interactions conducted via telemedicine in which conference attendees interact with and help make clinical decisions for selected patients who have given their consent to participate in these trainings.  We also conduct a one day training program per year which focuses on special topics such as women and HIV in prisons and HIV and Hepatitis in prisons.

Correctional Care Consultation

Our consultations are aimed at providing technical assistance to personnel within prisons, community–based organizations, and medical clinics to aid in the transition of releasing offenders to the community.
