Oral Health and HIV Symposium

This one-day symposium will provide healthcare professionals a general overview of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) with emphasis on oral health, oral care, and oral disease manifestations among patients with HIV.

An Educational Program for Dental and Nursing Professionals

This course is designed to give dental professionals, registered nurses and nurse practitioners the most current information on oral health, oral care and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The course will contain advanced information directed toward practitioners anticipating care and treatment of the HIV patient.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this symposium, you will be able to:

  • Identify the current HIV epidemiology, Department of Health and Human Services guidelines for HIV screening and testing
  • Describe the principles of referral of HIV patients
  • Discuss special considerations for dental treatment and oral surgery for the HIV/ AIDS patient
  • Identify HIV etiology and pathogenesis
  • Describe the guidelines for post-exposure prophylaxis.
