Expertise/Specialty of LPS

La Fe C.A.R.E. Center provides culturally sensitive clinical care, testing and counseling, and case management services to the six western most counties of Texas, that include both urban and rural populations. In addition, La Fe C.A.R.E. provides services to a unique population on the border that includes issues regarding medication adherence, drug interactions, resistance, TB, and minority women's health issues.

Training

We offer customized training events for clinicians serving people living with HIV/AIDS on the U.S. - Mexico Border. Training events are customized t fit an agency or individual's specific needs and include workshops, preceptorships and conferences. Clinical Consultation

Clinical consultations are provided to physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants on a variety of topics, including antiretroviral therapy, drug interactions and resistance, HIV/AIDS clinical updates and HIV/AIDS treatment management and post–exposure prophylaxis.

Gloria Hinojos

LPS Coordinator


Gloria Hinojos has worked within the field of HIV/AIDS for 8 years, all of them at the La Fe CARE Center. She is a coordinator for the AETC Local Performance Site. In addition, she works with others in several activities including medical record audits for Continuous Quality Improvement, Pre and Post Counseling and Partner Elicitation for Rapid HIV Testing and the inputting of medical record data for the local Ryan White Administrative Agency via ARIES. ARIES, the AIDS Regional Information and Evaluation System, was developed by the state of Texas to be used by HIV providers in Texas to automate, plan, manage, and report on client data. She has served on the Ryan White Consortium as well as the Board of Directors for AIDS Project El Paso (APEP) a local non-profit agency.

Armando Meza, MD

Faculty


Dr. Armando Meza, a board-certified infectious disease (ID) physician from the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, has been the La Fe CARE Center's medical director since 1999. He has been the Program Director of Internal Medicine at Texas Tech since 2002 and the Chair of the Infection Control Committee at Thomason Hospital since 2003. Despite his busy schedule, Dr. Meza provides HIV/AIDS medical services during expanded clinic hours, Tuesdays 1:00 to 7:30 p.m. every week.  Patients scheduled with Dr. Meza are unstable and advanced stage clients.  He is accessible by phone and e-mail for consultation during the week when he is not at the CARE Center and is an active member of the Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) committee.

Rhonda Fleming, MD

Faculty


Dr. Rhonda Fleming, another board-certified infectious disease (ID) physician from the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, joined the staff at the La Fe CARE Center in March of 2004. An experienced HIV/AIDS clinician, Dr. Fleming provides medical care services one half day a week at the La Fe CARE clinic.  Since her arrival, she has focused on the HIV-positive Hispanic women in care, addressing their specific medical and cultural needs.

In honor of National Pharmacist Day, La Fe CARE Center has invited this Dr. Ian McNicholl to provide his nationally recognized presentation.  This presentation will cover the following topics:

  1. How to apply basic pharmacology to problems solving in clinical dilemmas.
  2. How to determine the threshold for identifying clinically significant infections.
  3. How to identify resources for utilization when clinical issues arise.
