La Fe C.A.R.E. Center provides culturally sensitive clinical care, testing and counseling, and case management services to the six western most counties of Texas, that include both urban and rural populations. In addition, La Fe C.A.R.E. provides services to a unique population on the border that includes issues regarding medication adherence, drug interactions, resistance, TB, and minority women's health issues. | Michael Maillet LPS Administrator |
Michael Maillet, a Master level Social Worker who is the La Fe CARE Administrator, has worked in the field of HIV/AIDS for over sixteen years, mostly as a Social Service Manager. Mr. Maillet has been involved with several different policy making groups and committees which include the El Paso HIV Consortium, the HIV/AIDS West Texas Regional Advisory Council, AIDS Project El Paso (APEP), AIDS Regional Information and Education System (ARIES) and By-Law and Allocation committees. No other person in the El Paso area has worked longer in the field of HIV/AIDS than Mr. Maillet has. |
| Gloria Hinojos LPS Coordinator |
Gloria Hinojos has worked within the field of HIV/AIDS for 8 years, all of them at the La Fe CARE Center. She is a coordinator for the AETC Local Performance Site. In addition, she works with others in several activities including medical record audits for Continuous Quality Improvement, Pre and Post Counseling and Partner Elicitation for Rapid HIV Testing and the inputting of medical record data for the local Ryan White Administrative Agency via ARIES. ARIES, the AIDS Regional Information and Evaluation System, was developed by the state of Texas to be used by HIV providers in Texas to automate, plan, manage, and report on client data. She has served on the Ryan White Consortium as well as the Board of Directors for AIDS Project El Paso (APEP) a local non-profit agency.

| Ann Khalsa, MD, Clinical Director |
Dr. Ann Khalsa, a family practice physician, has 15 years of prior healthcare worker training experience as the director of HIV clinical training at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine local performance site (LPS) of the Pacific AIDS Education and Training Center (AETC) in Los Angeles. Since starting at the La Fe CARE Center in April 2006, she has become clinical director for La Fe CARE Center’s contract with the Texas-Oklahoma AIDS Education and Training Center, and is providing staff and other local health professionals HIV related training. Dr. Khalsa accepted the role of Medical Director at the La Fe CARE Center January 1, 2007. She is also the Chair of the Continuous Quality Improvement program. Dr. Khalsa provides on-site medical care four days a week. Two half days a week are for walk- in clinic to address acute care needs of clients. Dr. Khalsa has made a significant impact in the expansion of clinic services and has enhanced patient education, adherence, and quality of life of those we serve. |

Dr. Armando Meza, a board-certified infectious disease (ID) physician from the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, has been the La Fe CARE Center's medical director since 1999. He has been the Program Director of Internal Medicine at Texas Tech since 2002 and the Chair of the Infection Control Committee at Thomason Hospital since 2003. Despite his busy schedule, Dr. Meza provides HIV/AIDS medical services during expanded clinic hours, Tuesdays 1:00 to 7:30 p.m. every week. Patients scheduled with Dr. Meza are unstable and advanced stage clients. He is accessible by phone and e-mail for consultation during the week when he is not at the CARE Center and is an active member of the Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) committee. |
| Rhonda Fleming, MD Faculty |
Dr. Rhonda Fleming, another board-certified infectious disease (ID) physician from the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, joined the staff at the La Fe CARE Center in March of 2004. An experienced HIV/AIDS clinician, Dr. Fleming provides medical care services one half day a week at the La Fe CARE clinic. Since her arrival, she has focused on the HIV-positive Hispanic women in care, addressing their specific medical and cultural needs. |
| America Jones, RN, ACRN Faculty |
The administrator at the CARE Center of Centro de Salud Familiar La Fe in the U.S./Mexico Border city of El Paso, América Jones is a board certified registered nurse with experience in providing services to underserved populations, community health nursing, management, and leadership in the community of El Paso. She is a member of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care, Sigma Theta Tau, the honor society in nursing, the West Texas HIV Assembly, and Centers for Health Policy Development, Inc. (CHPD). She was recently honored with the Visiting Nurses Association 2006 Nurses' Excellence Award for her exemplary work in public and community health nursing in the community. |
