Session 1 - "Panel: Challenges in Special Populations Minorities"

Speaker: 1) Monica Ruiz, PhD, MPH

Session Description:

Despite advances in HIV care in prevention, some populations face persistent challenges when it comes to accessing evidence based prevention initiatives, testing & HIV and non-HIV related outcomes.  This session will have a focus on such challenges as well as how treatment adherence and retention in care impact negative outcomes in minority women.

By the end of this self-study module, participants will be able to:

    • Explain two challenges faced by minority populations in accessing HIV care.
    • Describe how treatment adherence and retention in care correlate to the health outcomes of minority women.

 

Session 2 -"Panel: Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission"

* UTMB designates this educational activity for up to 1.25 hours in ethics/professional responsibility.

Session Description:

HIV transmission from mother-to-child has significantly decreased in the last decade yet still as of 2005, 142 HIV infected children are born in the United States.  This panel will provide information on how to overcome certain barriers to decrease those infections.  A special emphasis will be given on the trend of pregnancies on already known and the ethical dilemmas that both patient and health care providers face.

By the end of this self-study module, participants will be able to:

    • Infer two barriers to decreasing the rates of mother-to-child HIV transmission.
    • Discuss two ethical dilemmas faced by the HIV positive woman and her health care provider.

 

Session 3 -"Quality Improvements in HIV Care for Women"

Speaker: Laura Armas-Kolostroubis, MD

Session Description:

Service delivery for HIV infected women requires a multi-disciplinary approach.  Join us to review how the patient center medical home model could improve service delivery and patient satisfaction. 

By the end of this self-study module, participants will be able to:

    • Describe two components of the medical home model.
    • Discuss how the methods within this model are designed to improve service delivery and patient satisfaction.

 

Session 4 -"Update on ART in Women"

Speaker: Monica Gandhi, MD

Session Description:

Outcomes improve, patients are living longer and facing co-morbidities related to aging.  HIV infected women have a different set of issues that will be addressed in this presentation including menopause, bone health & cardiovascular disease. 

By the end of this self-study module, participants will be able to:

    • Identify two common co-morbidities faced by aging HIV+ women.
    • Describe one consideration for ART in HIV+ women in menopause.
    • List two complications in HIV+ women with cardiovascular disease as related to ART.

 

Session 5 - "Gynecological Problems: Case Based Approach"

Speaker: Yvette Peters, NP

Session Description:

Gynecological complaints continue to be a frequent reason for consultation.  Join us in this interactive panel to discuss the management of common gynecological problems in HIV infected women. 

By the end of this self-study module, participants will be able to:

    • Outline two frequent reasons for consultation for HIV_ with gynecological complaints.
    • Discuss one effective strategy for managing common gynecological problems in HIV+ women.
